Victoria Jazz Fest: Elisapie

June 24 @ 9:30 PM - 11:30 PM

Ambassador for Inuit culture, Elisapie Isaac represents the wild and rough beauty of the North. Her latest album, The Ballad of the Runaway Girl, is nominated for a 2019 JUNO Award for “Indigenous Music Album of the Year”, and it’s the musical tale of an expatriate Inuk. The Canadian pop singer, broadcaster, documentary filmmaker and activist was born in Salluit, Quebec to an Inuk mother and a father from Newfoundland. Isaac collaborated with instrumentalist Alain Auger in the musical project Taima (Inuktitut for “that’s all” or “it is done”) in the early 2000s. The band’s sole album, Taima, won the 2005 JUNO Award for “Aboriginal Recording of the Year.” Now, Isaac offers her soulful music as she tenderly looks back on her heritage, telling her own story while making aboriginal musical classics shine. Her new album goes back to her roots, with both soft and raw moments and her very own mix of Inuktitut, English and French, unveiling the woman behind the music.
